Pacific Edge is hosting its second annual Bloc Party bouldering competition on October 14th. Competitors will tackle the boulders and vie for a chance to stand on the podium and win! Everyone who competes will receive a comp t-shirt, a raffle ticket and be able to join the after party for free. Spectators can pony up 10 bucks to eat and drink. Everyone is welcome to buy raffle tickets. This year we are not offering prizes to the winners, just sweet medals. All prizes will be given away in the raffle, and all proceeds after cost will be donated to the family of Marc Smith Sacks who was tragically killed in a climbing accident this summer. Pacific Edge is first and foremost a community of dedicated climbers who are passionate about the craft. This won’t be your typical bouldering competition with flying nun-chuck toe hooks and triple paddle dynos. Come try your hand on our humbling blocs, and get ready to cheer on your fiercest sand-bagging competitor who is definitely not a “V5” climber. There will be no gendered categories at this competition. There is only Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Open with medals going to the top 3 in each category. There will be other prizes given out for other competition performances, but you have to wait until the competition to find out those categories! The purpose of the event is to build our community, show our appreciation to everyone who chooses to climb at Pacific Edge, and to have an awesome time! What Category do I Belong in???
This is the age old question for everyone who wants to compete but not Sandbag their fellow competitors and misrepresent their climbing skills. You will assign your category based on your skill level, but are welcome to change it. Remember, it is all for fun and glory. After all, is just pebble wrestling and we all know you are just here for the food, beer, prizes, sweet sweet boulders, and t-shirt ;) Please refer to the following guide to determine your category
Beginner: You are a psyched climber who is eager to learn and grow your skills. You are currently projecting V1’s and 2’s, but are eyeing up those V3’s and may have sent one. Technical or Powerful V3’s still seem a bit out of reach.
Intermediate: You are starting to flex your skills. V3, 4’s and 5’s can still pose a problem, but in general you can put them to bed with some real work.
Advanced: V5’s no longer flummox you, although you don’t flash them all. Your bread and butter is really in the V6’s and the occasional V7.
Open: Everyone else!
Climbing is the great equalizer. If you use this metric to assign your category then no one should have a big advantage. Sandbagging is strongly discouraged. If competition judges see that you are plainly in the wrong category we will bump you. :) Don’t be that person.
